Sergio Marchi (1956) is a politician and former Minister of Foreign Trade of Canada and federal member of the Canadian Parliament for 15 years.

He was born in Argentina to an Italian family originally from Domanins, a small hamlet of San Giorgio della Richinvelda, in the province of Pordenone, Friuli-Venezia Giulia. His parents emigrated first to Argentina and then settled in Canada.

After graduating in Urban Planning from York University, in 1982 Marchi began his political career first at the municipal level, where he was elected Alderman for the Ward 1 district, in North York, and then was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in the 1984 elections, as a Liberal member of the Canadian Parliament.

In 1993, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien introduced Marchi into the Canadian Cabinet to appoint him Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and later, Minister of the Environment and Minister of International Trade.

In 1999, Marchi decided to voluntarily leave the political arena, in order to devote himself to a diplomatic career: he was elected Canadian Ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and, in 2003, he was appointed by the Canadian Government and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, to serve as Commissioner of the United Nations Global Commission on International Migration, a position he held until 2005.

Shortly after his mandate as Commissioner had expired, Marchi decided to start his collaboration with the law firm of Lang Michener LLP in Toronto, in the capacity of consultant.

Appointed Chairman of the Canada-China Business Council and Chairman of the Canadian Coalition for Services, he then embarked on a second tour to Geneva, to pursue an opportunity in the private sector and set up his own consulting firm, the "Marchi Group".

In 2015 he returned to Canada, where he was appointed President and CEO of the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA), the national body and voice of Canada's leading electricity companies, based in Ottawa, until 2019.

Marchi currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of several Canadian companies.
