Rome, 14 June 2024 - Presentation of the Report "Cyber Organized Crime – Mafias in Cyberspace"

14 June 2024 – 11.30 a.m.

Press Room of the Chamber of Deputies - via della Missione, 4 - Rome

From “pizzo” (extorted protection money) to ransomware, from drug dealing squares to virtual markets: mafias are increasingly expanding their criminal activities in the digital world, having understood the great opportunities offered by technological progress. The new frontier is cyberspace, where an increasingly hybrid organized crime acts in a structured, strategic and coordinated way.

After drafting the first report on the use of social media by mafias, the Magna Grecia Foundation has carried out a second study that provides an overview of cyber organized crime, i.e. how criminal organizations have digitally transitioned into areas that until a few years ago seemed unfathomable. What emerges is a scenario of concrete risk on the economic, legal and democratic fronts, which is even more worrying if we consider the IT vulnerability of companies and public administrations.

The report "Cyber organized crime – Mafias in cyberspace" was presented on Friday, June 14 at 11:30 a.m., at the Montecitorio Press Room and was streamed live on the website of the Chamber of Deputies and on that of the Magna Grecia Foundation www.webtvcamera.it – www.fondazionemagnagrecia.it
