Millennials in the South and the propensity for parenthood
Between policies and individual choices
The research, conducted by Emiliana Mangone and Giuseppe Masullo, explores the reasons why young men and women who belong to the Millennial generation, in particular with reference to those residing in southern regions such as Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Puglia and Sicily, show a low propensity for parenthood. The research highlights how taking on the responsibility of becoming parents is the result of a complex interrelationship of factors related to welfare and individual choices, with institutions playing a fundamental role. At the center of the analysis are the aspects emerging from the factors that allow individuals to express sense of belonging to the community and how it is manifested, also by accepting the responsibility of bringing a child into the world, a primary act to ensure the survival of the community itself.
